Just over four months after its launch, the plan to combat violence in sport, particularly sexual violence, has been expanded.
After receiving more than 2,000 reports of alleged violence, Sports Minister Roxana Maracineanu decided to step up action. She emphasised the issue of suitability checks, which verify that a professional coach does not appear on the automated judicial register of perpetrators of sexual or violent offences, but in fact apply only to those who hold a professional licence.
Yet many do not request it, thereby slipping through the net.
The aim is therefore to introduce this check for everyone by 1 January 2021.
A designated contact will also be appointed in each federation to deal specifically with violence.
Awareness is growing, and although federations are addressing the issue much more openly, we must now strengthen training for coaches and educators in receiving disclosures and supporting victims.
