Discussed for several weeks, the strategy of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for African women’s football has been unveiled. It is a four-year plan covering 2020–2023, taking account of the continent’s specific characteristics.
The plan’s strategy rests on five pillars: development, competitions, marketing and promotion, professionalisation and leadership, and social impact.
Development will involve accelerating the growth of women’s football at every level throughout Africa, increasing playing opportunities for women and girls and providing stronger, improved training opportunities for technical staff, as well as linking capacity-building courses with development programmes and competitions.
To ensure that efforts to develop women’s football are sustainable, all stakeholders will also need to work together to professionalise the structures supporting women’s football on and off the pitch, and increase the number of women in administrative leadership positions.
The social impact of such a plan is to harness the power of football to create a positive social impact for African women and girls.
