Mr Ahmad Ahmad, current President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), reflects on his role and provides an initial assessment.

When he took over at CAF in 2017, his teams immediately began work on overhauling the institution to improve its functioning and organisation.

With the creation of a governance committee, talent from across the continent is being mobilised to make African football a powerful educational tool accessible to everyone: professionals, amateurs, young people and, of course, women. This new governance model is inclusive and consultative, with the Executive Committee holding genuine decision-making power.
Partnerships are also being established, notably with FIFA, to audit the entire institution.

The coronavirus epidemic unfortunately brought all their activities to a halt; nevertheless, they continued to provide assistance to member associations and took the opportunity to approve the creation of the Women’s Champions League, as well as a professional refereeing system for men and women meeting international standards.
Let us hope that developments in the public health situation will allow African football to return to a path of momentum and renewal.
