During the 44th General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), President Patrice Motsepe launched the new African Super League.

The competition would begin in August 2023 with FIFA’s backing. FIFA says this new tournament “will change the face and competitiveness of CAF and African football”, unlike the European Super League, which did not materialise and remains the subject of ongoing litigation.

The competition would begin with 24 teams divided geographically into three groups of eight, representing 14 matches for each team. The top five in each group and the best sixth-placed team would qualify for the round of 16.
A total of 197 matches would be played.

Patrice Motsepe revealed: ‘We announced on 3 July 2022 that the total prize money for the CAF Africa Super League would be USD 100 million, with the winner receiving USD 11.5 million. We intend to pay each member association USD 1 million a year from the CAF Africa Super League funds. We also intend to allocate USD 50 million to CAF from these funds for the development of junior and women’s football and for all its other competitions, to ensure that they are competitive globally.’

A tournament that aims to revolutionise African football, despite fans’ scepticism, and become the continent’s most profitable competition.
