In the wake of ‘FifaGate’ in 2015, a case that led to the arrest of several world football officials for corruption, the US Department of Justice awarded USD 201 million to the ‘FIFA Foundation’ on Tuesday 24 August as compensation for corrupt practices spanning decades.

Bribes were mainly paid in exchange for the award of television rights. The compensation payments will be used primarily for youth assistance programmes.

The US authorities are continuing their investigations, particularly into the award of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar and allegations of vote buying.
