The African Nations Championship has made history. Lydia Tadesse experienced a historic first during the match between Namibia and Tanzania on 23 January.

The young Ethiopian referee became the first woman to officiate at a match in an official men’s competition organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

She is now following in the footsteps of French referee Stéphanie Frappart, the first woman to referee a men’s international match in an official competition, in the Nations League in 2019, and to referee in the men’s Champions League in 2020.
